#FeesMustFall

#FeesMustFall

#FeesMustFall is a student protest motion that started in mid-October 2015, regarding to an increase in fees to all South African universities. The movement was started by a young woman Nompendulo Mkhatshwa from Wits University. #FeesMustFall was one of the biggest trending topic on social media in 2015. The Fees must fall campaign affected every student whose on tertiary and a potential university student, the increasing of fees would have made many student to take gap year or rather others to drop out because of the outstanding fees this movement made the South African government to act fast due to lectures and exams where paused. Mr Jacob Zuma announced that the fees for 2016 will be 0% increase now that the fees have fallen most students were approve by NSFAS and most private and public organizations came together and provided fees to students to further their studies. Most students are in studying because of this movement.  This fees must fall hashtag went viral on the social media that it came to a point where even international students came to support the fees must fall campaign on social media, this made it clear that social media has the power to spread the word.

Looking at the negative side of this fees must fall campaign is that the quality of education has decreased because now lectures are pulling out from university due to the salary they are earning, bearing in mind that the universities has equipment to buy, maintenance of the universities even the tax payers are going to suffer because tax will be increasing. The students also demanded that they want free education which will be a challenge to South African government because currently our economy is unstable. The fees must fall protest made students to destroy property and they have to be fixed. Universities of South Africa responded in a professional manner about the protest and waited for the government to come with a decision. The social media have a huge impact on our lives this hashtag is a solid evidence. Social Media has the power to destroy a brand to a point where people will look down on it, for example minister Blade during the addressing of fees must fall he thought he was not recorded during the media conference and he said students must fall, my point here is that when trying to comment on something or posting on social media you have to be aware of what you are saying because these days social media has power. When posting on social media you have to be aware of what you are say if it’s ethical or unethical. Many people were against the fees must fall campaign until they heard the complaints of student many people became aware of them through social media this show that social media a powerful tool of social media.

#SAYNOTOXENOPHOBIA

Xenophobia is a dislike of people from other countries(foreign people).#SayNoToXenophobia  is a hashtag that started trending in 2015 to stop the fear of having foreign  people in our country. South Africa is a multicultural  country and it practices Ubuntu people from other countries are also human and they are our brothers and sisters and they come to our country because they see opportunities in South Africa as it is one of the developed country in Africa. During Xenophobia our economy went down because of the protest of Xenophobia it affected not only big business but also the local businesses in S.A this also affected the economy because most of S.A investors in S.A are from all over Africa. I believe that every South Africa has a right to open a small business and register it, my point here is that we don't have to burn our fellow Africans just because we say they steal our Jobs lets stop pointing fingers and stand up for what is right. We are African Lets Unite and Make Africa one of the rich continents in the world. The Xenophobic attacks in our country will destroy our future opportunities. This Hashtag says a lot we have to be one and unite against the killings of our fellow brothers and sisters. As an upcoming public relations practitioner I say No to Xenophobia and lets stand together to fight it. Social Media is also a place to spread the word of Say No To Xenophobia because most people have access to social media, yet looking on the other side social also can have a bad influence to this issue of xenophobia what I mean is people can either joke about this issue or  hate on it, before actually posting on social media think about the next person. Now as Xenophobic attacks have settled lets try to rebuild trust to our fellow African so we can move forward and and be ONE. We have to use social media as a way to stop issues before they get out of hand and destroy what we have.Nelson Mandela the man who fought for our freedom wouldn't condone such so lets make him proud and be United Africans. Our government responded in positive way to the say no to xenophobia hash tag. Our President even made a speech addressing people to stop killing people from other countries. Lets unite and Be one.
